Tips: View Page Source Code in Your Text Editor

If you frequently examine the source code of web pages while using Firefox, this handy trick will load the source code directly in your favorite editor.
Load your Firefox configuration file by typing about:config in the address bar, and follow these steps:

  • Type or copy & paste "view_source.editor.external" (without the quote marks) into the filter address bar. Once the about:config entry is displayed, right click on the entry and select "Toggle" to change the value to "true".
  • Type or copy & paste “view_source.editor.path” (without the quote marks) into the Filter Address Bar. Once the about:config entry is displayed, right click on the entry and select “Modify”.
  • Enter the target path of your favorite code/text editor (without the quote marks). For example, chosen “C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe”. Click “OK” and restart your browser to complete the changes.

Now, whenever you view source code from within Firefox, your favorite code/text editor will open up displaying all that webpage code. (via The How-To Geek)

Weave Update for Firefox Syncs Your Web Identity

If you’re a Firefox user, you now have the ability to synchronize not only your bookmarks, browsing history and user preferences across multiple PCs, you can also sync your identity.

Mozilla has updated Weave, its free add-on for Firefox that lets you synchronize all your personal data across the various Firefox installations you have running on your work PC, your home PCs and your mobile phone. This latest update to Weave (now at version 0.4, which can be downloaded from Mozilla), builds in support for syncing online identities, including logins and passwords for your favorite websites, as well as support for OpenID logins at any website that utilizes them.

Once you’ve told Weave to keep track of your login data, the plug-in uses the stored identities to automatically log you into your favorite sites, in most cases requiring only a single click. Mozilla showed off Weaves’s new identity syncing features back in May when the company first announced that Weave would support OpenID.

The latest version of Weave also supports Fennec, the mobile version of Firefox, which means you can easily transfer your desktop browsing sessions to your Fennec-compatible phone.

For example:

  • Get the same results on the Smart Location Bar on each of your Firefox browsers, so you can get to your favorite sites with just a few keystrokes
  • Continue what you were doing: have the ability to open any tab you have open on any of your Firefox browsers
  • Keep the same list of bookmarks on all of your Firefox browsers
  • Easily sign in to all your favorite sites using your saved passwords (this is especially handy on mobile phones, where it’s hard to type in complex passwords)
  • Do it all securely: Weave Sync encrypts user data before uploading it to Mozilla’s servers, so that only you can access your data
Getting Started
  • Step 1. Make sure you are running the latest Firefox 3.5 beta
  • Step 2. Download and install the latest development milestone of the Weave client.
  • Step 3. Open the Weave menu in the Tools menu or the bottom-right of the status-bar and select 'Sign in' to start syncing with Weave!
