Blog Action Day 2010

Blog Action Day 2010 will happen on October 15, 2010, and the topic is - WATER! Bloggers will take a single day and use it to write about the event’s chosen cause. In 2009, more than 13,000 bloggers from over 150 countries participated in Blog Action Day, and this year's topic is certain to get a lot of support!  After all, clean water is important to every person on the planet.

To participate in Blog Action Day 2010, you just have to write a post about water on October 15, 2010. You can register your blog on the Blog Action Day website prior to the event, and a link to your blog will be published on the Blog Action Day site.  Your Blog Action Day post will also be added to the site on October 15th.

Why Water?

Right now, almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in eight of us.

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.

90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation.

But, water moves beyond just a human rights issue. It’s an environmental issue. An animal welfare issue. A sustainability issue. Water is a global issue, deserving a global conversation.

Stuck for idea? There's a whole list of suggested post ideas.

Blog Action Day is an annual event that brings bloggers together to post about a worthy cause. In its fourth year, Blog Action Day has covered environmental issues, poverty and climate change. This year, water was chosen by user vote on Change.org’s blog. It is the first year that Change.org is taking on the event from Blog Action Day Co-creators Collis and Cyan Ta’eed.

Apologies :( So like the weather nuts predicted, the party for millions of people hoping to watch Wednesday’s solar eclipse was ruined by heavy clouds and raining in Shanghai. I have not got any pic and vids of the eclipse, sadly. But I got three nice pictures from other parts of China. They're amazing. (You can view'em on my Flickr .) Also you can check out loads of videos on YouKu’s special eclipse page.
When the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century started at 8:30 am (0030 GMT), I did live tweet up(@lyanghsueh), in case you missed it:

  • The cloudy sky gets darker, but still no sign of the sun in Shanghai downtown. #
  • Shanghai has turned on its street lights. #
  • It's raining hard here, can't see the sun, sadly. But darker more. OMG #
  • Enjoy this special dark moment... well, we missed the total solar elicpse. Shanghai #
  • Gettin' brighter now, a new day starts. Wait! My power, my powers gone. No ;) #

While it may have been a bit of a letdown to not be able to actually see the eclipse, and only experience it through the night-like daytime darkness it gave us for a few minutes, it was cool none the less :)

Coming Soon: Total Solar Eclipse 2009

This summer, those of us living in China have the spectacular chance to see a total eclipse of the sun, a truly rare opportunity because the moon completely covers the sun, leaving a colorful ring around it called a Corona (meaning crown). Thousands of people from the rest of Asia and all over the world will be coming to China to witness the phenomenon. If you have never seen a total solar eclipse, then this is your chance to see this China solar eclipse 2009 from several major cities. This 22nd July will be the only solar eclipse of this kind this year and remarkably, instead of the usual 200 Km spectrum of visible areas, there will be 254Km, providing a magnificent area from which to view the eclipse from Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou,Wuhan, Nanjing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Suining and Yichang. You have plenty of options to choose from if you want to go and see it yourself. The eclipse will also be visible for a full 6 minutes and 39 seconds, which is the longest visibility period of the 21st century.

This coming 22nd July, (If the weather's good) I'll put some real pics and vids of the eclipse into my blog, and live tweet from my twitter account : @lyanghsueh, welcome to follow!

Warnings: Never view the sun with the naked eye!

Win a Piece of Moon Rock

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

You will doubtless know the words relayed from Neil Armstrong when he stepped off Apollo 11's lunar module and onto the moon itself , 21 July 2009 sees the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Now, New Scientist magazine competition to celebrate that historic event offers a rare and fabulous prize for the winner: a scrap of genuine moon rock weighs almost 1.4 grams. Typically, they are worth around $1000 per gram!

(* pic: The piece of moon rock is part of a lunar meteorite found by French collector Luc Labenne, in the Dhofar region of Southern Oman, on the eastern border of Yemen.)

Wow, a real moon rock? yep. And the competition is simple. Think of something better for Neil Armstrong to have said, something even more memorable, or perhaps something funnier...

2009 CSS Naked Day

<?php
function is_naked_day($d) {
$start = date('U', mktime(-12, 0, 0, 04, $d, date('Y')));
$end = date('U', mktime(36, 0, 0, 04, $d, date('Y')));
$z = date('Z') * -1;
$now = time() + $z;
if ( $now >= $start && $now <= $end ) {
return true;
}
return false;
}
?>

<head>中调用:

<head>
...
<?php
if ( is_naked_day(9) ) {
echo '<!-- naked day has no styles -->';
} else {
echo '<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="styles.css" />';
}
?>
...
</head>
